About the Journal
The Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia (JCEA) is a peer-reviewed, fully open-access journal on convergence and future studies in Asia. eISSN 2383-9449.
Aims and scope
JCEA publishes peer-reviewed scholarship on East Asia, data, and the networked society. The journal was founded to examine current political, social and economic trends in East and Southeast Asia, and its scope has since broadened to emphasise (socio-technical) convergence and future (network) studies — among them triple-helix and innovation-system research, social network analysis, internet and social-media research, digital culture, science and technology policy, and the social consequences of artificial intelligence in the region.
The journal welcomes articles reporting original empirical or theoretical research, and articles that substantially re-examine an existing body of scholarship. Contributions from any disciplinary background are considered provided the work is methodologically sound and addresses the journal's regional and thematic scope. Target readership
JCEA is written for an international scholarly readership: researchers and graduate students in Asian studies, communication and media studies, political science, sociology, science and technology studies, and innovation policy, together with policy analysts and practitioners working on East and Southeast Asia. Articles are expected to be intelligible to specialists outside the author's own subfield.
Publishing schedule
JCEA publishes two issues a year, in June and December. The journal keeps to this schedule other than in exceptional circumstances, and any change is announced on this website. Articles are published in a numbered issue with continuous pagination; there is no rolling advance publication.
Open access
JCEA is a fully open-access journal. All content is freely available without charge to the reader or the reader's institution from the moment of publication. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search and link to the full text of articles without prior permission, subject to the terms of the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence under which articles are published. Authors retain copyright. There is no subscription, no registration requirement and no pay-per-view charge.
Publication is funded by institutional support from the journal's publishers together with an article processing charge payable by authors on acceptance — no submission fee, USD 100 (KRW 150,000) on acceptance, or USD 300 (KRW 400,000) where the research was externally funded. Peer review
All research articles are peer reviewed by at least two external experts under a single-anonymised model; book reviews and editor's notes are editorially assessed and are labelled as such. The Editor-in-Chief takes the final decision on every manuscript. The full process, the reviewer-selection criteria and the journal's timelines are described under Editorial Process and Peer Review.
Ownership and management
JCEA is owned and published jointly by two bodies:
- the Cyber Emotions Research Center at Yeungnam University, Gyeongsan, Republic of Korea, which hosts the editorial office and provides the journal's editorial and administrative support; and
- WATEF, the World Association for Triple Helix and Future Strategy Studies, the learned society with which the journal is affiliated, which provides its scholarly community and governs the editorial board.
The two bodies share responsibility for the journal under a standing agreement; neither has any role in decisions on individual manuscripts. Editorial authority rests with the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial team, who act independently of the publishers, of the editorial board, and of any funder of the research under consideration. Neither publisher trades under a name that could be confused with any other journal or organisation.
History
The journal was founded in 2001 by the Austrian Association of East Asian Studies, together with scholars from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, and has been open access since 2002. In 2010 the Cyber Emotions Research Center at Yeungnam University became a co-publisher. Following the closure of the Austrian association in 2012, the journal transferred to the Cyber Emotions Research Center and the Asia Triple Helix Society, which was renamed WATEF in 2015. The journal has retained its title, ISSN and scholarly continuity throughout.
