Submission Guidelines

The Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia welcomes original research on political, social and economic trends in East and Southeast Asia, and on socio-technical convergence and future network studies. Before submitting, please read the Publication Ethics policy and the fee and waiver policy.

How to submit

Manuscripts are submitted through the ACOMS+ system at acoms.accesson.kr/jceasia. For technical problems with the submission system, contact acomsplus@kisti.re.kr. For questions about the editorial process, contact the editorial office at j.c.eastern.asia@gmail.com.

Fees

There is no submission fee. An article processing charge of USD 100 (KRW 150,000) is payable on acceptance, or USD 300 (KRW 400,000) in total where the research was externally funded. Exemptions and waivers, other possible charges, and the journal's business model are set out in full on the Author Fees, Waivers and Business Model page. Fee status plays no part in editorial decisions.

Special issues carry full-length papers only, normally up to five per issue.

Originality and redundant publication

By submitting, the authors confirm that the manuscript is original, that it has not been published before in whole or in substantial part, and that it is not under consideration by another journal. Previous appearance as a conference abstract, a thesis chapter or a preprint does not prevent submission, but must be disclosed in the cover letter with a citation or link to the earlier version.

Publishing substantially the same work in more than one journal, and dividing a single study into several minimally distinct articles, are not acceptable. Where an article draws on the authors' own earlier work, that work must be cited and the overlap explained. See the intellectual property and research integrity policy.

Authorship

Every named author must meet all four of the journal's authorship criteria — substantial contribution, drafting or critical revision, approval of the submitted version, and accountability for the work. Contributors who do not meet all four should be acknowledged instead. Changes to the author list after submission require the written agreement of all authors, including any author being added or removed. Originality screening

Every submission must be accompanied by a plagiarism check report from Grammarly, Turnitin or another international plagiarism checker. Software designed for Korean-language texts, including CopyKiller, is not accepted for this purpose. The editorial office additionally screens manuscripts with iThenticate where overlap is suspected, at any stage including after acceptance.

Disclosures required in the manuscript

Conflicts of interest — all financial and non-financial competing interests of every author, or an explicit statement that there are none.
Funding — every grant, contract or publication fund supporting the work, with award numbers where applicable.
Ethical approval — for research involving human participants, the approving committee and reference number, and confirmation that informed consent was obtained; or an explanation of why approval was not required.
Data availability — where the data, code and materials underlying the findings can be obtained, with a persistent identifier where they are deposited; or the reason they cannot be shared.
Use of generative AI — the tool, version and purpose, where such a tool was used in preparing the manuscript. AI tools cannot be named as authors and authors remain fully responsible for the content. See the AI policy.

Format requirements

Manuscripts must be submitted in MS Word or RTF format and must follow the journal's manuscript template. Manuscripts that do not comply with the template and the word limits are returned or declined at pre-check without review.

Pre-submission checklist

File is in MS Word or RTF and follows the journal template.
The manuscript is within the word limit for its type.
Previously published material is properly cited and written permission has been obtained for any copyrighted material reproduced.
The cover letter gives the names and contact details of all authors, summarises the research, states that the work is original and not under consideration elsewhere, and discloses any prior posting.
The cover letter names three suggested experts in the area, with affiliations and the reason for each recommendation. Suggested reviewers must not be co-authors, colleagues at the same institution, or the authors' supervisors or students. The editors are not bound by these suggestions.
A plagiarism check report is attached.
Conflict of interest, funding, ethical approval, data availability and AI-use statements are included in the manuscript.

Copyright and licensing

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication. Articles are published under the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence, and authors may deposit the submitted, accepted or published version in a repository without embargo. See Copyright and Licence for the full terms.

Review and timelines

Manuscripts are peer reviewed as described under Editorial Process and Peer Review. Submission to first decision takes approximately two months, and submission to publication approximately fourteen weeks on average. Acceptance is never guaranteed. Authors may withdraw a manuscript at any time, without charge.
